83rd anniversary of the SS Habana’s arrival to Southampton

Dear Readers

Covid-19 seems to have become a central feature of all our lives with all the curtailments and worries involved with it. So my first wish, and of all the trustees, is that you and your families are healthy and as well as possible. I am sure that for many of you one of the hardest things to cope with is the separation from our families - both young and old. In times of potential danger our instincts are to close in around our family and that is not now possible. Nor was it possible in 1937 when so many families made the decision to send their children to other countries; we can perhaps empathise more now with the agonies on both sides of the separation.

Although we have no activities lined up for the forseeable future, we are delighted to be receiving perhaps more stories about individual niños and staff than usual. Where possible we are working to add the relevant translations to these so that the histories can be enjoyed by all our readers.

We are able to do this due to the efforts of two new members to our team. We now have an experienced translator, Lita Power (Ma Dolores), the daughter of an auxiliar who accompanied the children. The second addition to the team is our new subeditor, Ma Carmen Coupland, who is a longtime supporter of ours and the daughter of a niña.You may remember that she was our membership secretary some years ago. Both are extremely welcome and we hope that they will enjoy their chosen tasks.

BCA'37UK - Euskadi. May 20th sees the launch of a new Twitter feed from BCA'37UK - Euskadi @basquechildrenE. This aims to post tweets producing a time line of events during the Spanish Civil War and during the niños stay in Britain. It will be run by another long time supporter Gaizka Garamendi of Bilbao (aka Gurimousen).

Herminio Martínez
In January we sadly announced the death of Herminio on 29th December 2019.
The family had planned to hold a memorial event in the spring of 2020, but due to prevailing circumstances this has not proved possible.
Maya, Herminio and Verena's daughter, has sent us the following article that appeared in Tiempo de Canarias. It was Herminio's last interview and was made on 15th December just two weeks before his death. The author Ángeles Arencibia is also a correspondent for El País.

Queridos lectores

Covid-19 parece haberse convertido en una característica central de todas nuestras vidas con todas las limitaciones y preocupaciones relacionadas con él. Entonces, mi primer deseo, y de todos los fideicomisarios, es que tu y tu familia estéais bien de salud y lo mejor posible. Estoy seguro de que para muchos de vosotros una de las cosas más difíciles de enfrentar es la separación de nuestras familias, tanto jóvenes como mayores. En tiempos de peligro potencial, nuestros instintos deben acercarse a nuestra familia y eso ahora no es posible. Tampoco fue posible en 1937 cuando tantas familias tomaron la decisión de enviar a sus hijos a otros países; quizás podamos empatizar más ahora con las agonías en ambos lados de la separación.

Aunque no tenemos actividades programadas para el futuro previsible, estamos encantados de recibir tal vez más historias sobre niños y personal individual de lo habitual. Siempre que sea posible, estamos trabajando para agregar las traducciones relevantes para que todos nuestros lectores puedan disfrutar de las historias.

Podemos hacerlo gracias a los esfuerzos de dos nuevos miembros de nuestro equipo. Ahora tenemos una traductora experimentada, Lita Power (Ma Dolores), hija de un auxiliar que acompañó a los niños. La segunda incorporación al equipo es nuestra nueva editora, Ma Carmen Coupland, quien nos ha apoyado durante mucho tiempo y es hija de una niña. Quizás recuerden que ella fue nuestra secretaria de membresía hace algunos años. Ambos son extremadamente bienvenidos y esperamos que disfruten de sus tareas elegidas.

BCA'37UK - Euskadi. El 20 de mayo, se lanzará un nuevo feed de Twitter de BCA'37UK - Euskadi @basquechildrenE. Tiene como objetivo publicar tweets produciendo una línea de tiempo de eventos durante la Guerra Civil española y durante la estancia de los niños en Gran Bretaña. Será dirigido por otro seguidor de mucho tiempo, Gaizka Garamendi de Bilbao (también conocido como Gurimousen).

Herminio Martínez
En enero, anunciamos tristemente la muerte de Herminio el 29 de diciembre de 2019.
La familia había pensado celebrar un evento conmemorativo en la primavera de 2020, pero debido a las circunstancias imperantes, esto no ha sido posible.
Maya, la hija de Herminio y Verena, nos ha enviado el siguiente artículo que apareció en Tiempo de Canarias. Fue la última entrevista de Herminio y se realizó el 15 de diciembre, sólo dos semanas antes de su muerte. La autora Ángeles Arencibia es también corresponsal de El País.
