Dear Readers
This year we commemorate 85 years since 3862 children, 95 maestras, 120 auxiliares and 15 priests
fled from a cruel civil war to find refuge in the UK - the "EXPEDICIÓN A INGLATERRA".
Among them were many members of our own families, probably the lucky ones. As a mother and
grandmother I can scarcely bear to think of the agonising decisions made by parents to send their children away.
We started thinking about this anniversary innocent of any thought that a similar nightmare would be
playing out in Ukraine today, 85 years later. The parallels run on so many levels: a few days ago
the Ukrainian President Zelensky said, "We are in April 2022, but it seems like April 1937",
referring to Guernica; our own government dragging its feet to offer refuge contrasting yet again
with the outpouring of humanitarian sentiment and offers of help from the people of Britain.
We, our joint associations, stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and feel a deep empathy with their suffering.
In 1937 John Langdon-Davies saw the suffering of children during the Spanish Civil War and set up
"Foster Parents" to help, support and foster individual children. It has now grown to become
"Plan International".
Remembering Foster Parents' commitment to help children in Spain and then the Basque
children in the UK, we are happy to have made a donation to help them continue to help children,
this time in Ukraine. If you also wish to make a donation to Plan International there is a link

For this year's doubly poignant commemorations we will repeat the pattern set up five years ago when
we first started this newsletter: we will have a scrolled section on the website showing all the
planned events and gradually fill in the details as we learn of them. Also we will send a newsletter
highlighting the events for the following two months. The events start from this April and finish in
mid-September. There are events in UK and Euskadi, some big, some small.
We hope you can join us.

José Vicente Cañada García — 28 February 1930 - 11 March 2022 in Bilbao, aged 92.
President of the Association of Evacuated Children of the Civil War
We offer our condolences to his wife, Mercedes Gutiérrez; sons, José Luis and Estíbaliz,
Belén and Sebastián, Amaia and Aitor: grandchildren, Izei, Oier, Jon,Uxue y Egoi, brothers, brothers
and sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces and other family.

ASSOCIATION NOTICES
We are delighted to announce that Natalia Benjamin, one of the founders of this association, is to
be awarded the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa by Oxford Brookes University.
The event will take place on May 23rd. It will be a closed event and Natalia will be accompanied and ably supported by
her daughter Victoria.

Santurce Council Agree to a new monument to remember children evacuated in 1937
The Socialist Youth of Bizkaia have achieved success in their efforts to persuade the local council
of Santurce to erect a monument to all those children evacuated from that port in 1937. We applaud
their efforts and congratulate them on their success …

How a Basque refugee football team overcame tragedy to take Wales by storm.
We would like to draw your attention to this very interesting article by Christopher Evans.
It describes the close ties between the Basque country and Wales, and the arrival of the Basque
children in Wales. Initially housed at Cambria House, the creation of a football team gave the boys
some much-needed escapism. Settling on the name "Basque Boys AFC", the team played a number of games
throughout South Wales …

Queridos lectores
Este año conmemoramos 85 años desde que 3862 niños, 95 maestras, 120 auxiliares y 15 sacerdotes
huyeron de una cruel guerra civil para encontrar refugio en el Reino Unido - la EXPEDICIÓN A INGLATERRA.
Entre ellos había muchos miembros de nuestras propias familias, probablemente los más afortunados.
Como madre y abuela me da miedo pensar en las agónicas decisiones que tomaron los padres para enviar
a sus hijos lejos.
Empezamos a pensar en este aniversario sin pensar que una pesadilla similar se estaría produciendo
en Ucrania hoy, 85 años después. Los paralelismos son muchos: hace unos días, el presidente
ucraniano Zelensky dijo: "estamos en abril de 2022, pero parece abril de 1937", refiriéndose a
Guernica; nuestro propio gobierno se demora en ofrecer refugio, lo que contrasta una vez más con la
avalancha de sentimientos humanitarios y ofertas de ayuda del pueblo británico.
Nosotros, nuestras asociaciones conjuntas, nos solidarizamos con el pueblo de Ucrania y sentimos una profunda empatía con su sufrimiento.
En 1937, John Langdon-Davies vio el sufrimiento de los niños durante la Guerra Civil española y creó
la organización "Foster Parents" para ayudar a acoger a niños individuales, que ahora se ha convertido
en "Plan Internacional". Recordando el compromiso de Foster Parents para ayudar a los niños en España
y luego a los niños vascos en el Reino Unido, estamos contentos de haber hecho una donación para
ayudarles a seguir ayudando a los niños, esta vez en Ucrania. Si también quieres hacer una donación

Para las conmemoraciones doblemente conmovedoras de este año, repetiremos la pauta establecida hace
cinco años, cuando empezamos a publicar este boletín: tendremos una sección desplegable en el sitio
web que muestre todos los eventos previstos y completaremos gradualmente los detalles a medida que
los conozcamos. Y enviaremos un boletín en el que se destacarán los actos de los dos meses
siguientes. Los eventos comienzan a partir de este mes de abril y terminan a mediados de septiembre.
Hay eventos en el Reino Unido y en Euskadi, algunos grandes y otros pequeños.
Esperamos que te puedas unir a nosotros para algún evento.

Nos gustaría llamar su atención sobre este interesante artículo por Christopher Evans.
Describe los estrechos lazos entre el País Vasco y Gales, y la llegada de los vascos
niños en Gales. Inicialmente ubicado en Cambria House, la creación de un equipo de fútbol les dio a los niños
algo de escapismo muy necesario. Con el nombre de "Basque Boys AFC", el equipo disputó varios partidos
