Dear Readers
I really hope that you are all keeping well and warm in these difficult times for us all.
Our last newsletter looked forward to the last planned events for the 85th anniversary.
Then the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II and her subsequent funeral meant that we had a scramble to reorganise these same events.
The Southampton Quay Park plaque installation took place on 22 October.
The Panel Discussion at the University of Southampton will have taken place by the time that this newsletter goes out.
The Sir Harold Hillier Gardens event will now take place on April 3rd next year.
You can read below about these events, reports and other exhibitions and so on.
As you can imagine all these last minute changes have been quite stressful for us and involved us in a lot of extra work, so you will,
I’m sure, allow us to be a little less busy for the next few months.
As an association we welcome three new trustees to our board who bring us a wealth of experience and expertise:
Peter Anderson, Gail Giles and Karen Robson. There is more on their appointments below.
With that, I will leave you to explore the rest of the newsletter.

NEW TRUSTEES
We are pleased to welcome Karen Robson, Gail Giles and Peter Anderson as new trustees of the Association,
joining Carmen Kilner, Ed Packard, Simon Martinez and Willie Black.
We look forward to using the additional wealth of experience and expertise of our new trustees in consolidating our archive of material
about the Basque Children for the benefit of posterity, and being able to offer more talks and exhibitions locally throughout the UK.
Karen Robson is essentially the UK Basque children's archivist and is based in the key location of Southampton
where she is Head of Archives and Special Collections at the University of Southampton.
Gail Giles has been a powerhouse in research predating the formation of our Association and
has been a key contributer and organiser of events in Wales.
Peter Anderson is one of the current leading academics of the Basque children.
He is based in Leeds where he is Professor of Twentieth-Century Spanish History and Deputy Head of School of History
at the University of Leeds.

Memorial to the Basque children in Southampton
On Saturday 22nd October 2022 in Southampton a memorial plaque and sculpture dedicated to
the Basque Children who arrived there 85 years ago and the volunteers who supported them were
unveiled. This was organised by BCA’37 UK and the Friends of Town Quay Park. The park is the
closest park to the Port of Southampton where the SS Habana which had travelled from Bilbao …

The Basque Refugee Children in Chandler's Ford 1937-2022
Exhibition at Chandler's Ford Library - 12 November to 31 December
The camp at North Stoneham was in Chandler's Ford in the summer of 1937.
We are very pleased to see the camp remembered there and to see the work of Stuart Allen.

Estimados lectores
Espero de verdad que todos os esteis manteniendo bien y abrigados en estos tiempos difíciles para todos nosotros.
Nuestro último boletín anticipaba los últimos actos previstos para el 85 aniversario.
El fallecimiento de SM la Reina Isabel II y su posterior funeral nos obligaron a reorganizar estos mismos actos.
La instalación de la placa en el Parque del Muelle de Southampton tuvo lugar el día 22 octubre.
La mesa redonda de la Universidad de Southampton ya habrá tenido lugar cuando se publique este boletín.
El acto en Sir Harold Hillier Gardens tendrá lugar el 3 de abril del año que viene.

Como podreis imaginar, todos estos cambios de última hora han sido bastante estresantes para nosotros
y nos han supuesto mucho trabajo extra, así que estoy segura de que nos permitiráis estar un poco menos ocupados durante los próximos meses.
Recientemente la asociación, dio la bienvenida a tres nuevos administradores que nos aportan su gran experiencia y conocimiento:
Peter Anderson, Gail Giles y Karen Robson. Más abajo encontrarán detalles sobre sus nombramientos.

El sábado 22 de octubre de 2022 en Southampton, una placa conmemorativa y una escultura dedicadas a
los Niños Vascos que llegaron allí hace 85 años y los voluntarios que los apoyaron fueron

El campamento en North Stoneham estaba en Chandler's Ford en el verano de 1937.
