Dear Readers
As always, I hope that this letter finds you all in good health and that you are anticipating some
rest and relaxation together with family and friends, and away from work and other stresses.
The previous newsletter focused on the wonderful events commemorating the 85th anniversary; the end
of another chapter. As we move on, I would like to let you know some of the changes
that are taking place in our Association.
At a recent trustees meeting, we agreed to move to a flat management structure with shared
responsibility, involvement and action between all the trustees. This means that all mail to the
association now goes to the seven existing trustees, rather than just to me.
We also agreed in principle to increase the number of trustees, and to form, or utilize, a larger
support/working/advisory group that can be called upon to help with our work. The hope is that these
will increase the representation by second generation and the degree of involvement for those that
wish it so.
Both these latter ideas have been agreed in principle but need further discussion at a future
trustees meeting before settling on the details of how this will work and when it will be
implemented.
We also agreed to adopt a policy to prevent bullying and harassment.
Aside from these internal matters, we are sad to note that our stalwart supporters Na-Mara are to
retire from active duty to pursue more studio-based activities. We thank them and wish them well.
As usual, below, you can see all our recent activities and news.
As you may have gathered from all the above, we are no longer going to have a Secretary or Chair,
though Ed Packard remains as Treasurer. I am therefore taking this opportunity to step down from
much of the day to day running of the association and whilst remaining an active trustee, will
concentrate my time on the website and this associated newsletter where I will continue to work with
Willie and Gerald. I will of course complete any outstanding talks and projects that I am involved
with and continue to support the association but more from the backbenches. I thank you all for your
support in the past.

Joaquin García Viso
Born 14th May 1927, San Sebastian
Died 22nd July 2023, Mendaro, aged 96
We have been informed by Oskar Garcia of the sad death of his father.
We send our condolences to all his family.

sanctuary in Brampton as refugees from the Civil War. They were supported & cared for by the people

Creative Connections Southampton
25th May 2023
This exhibition, part of an initiative by The National Portrait Gallery, featured a dramatic mural
by Pete Codling called The Kinship inspired by Picasso's Guernica.
It looks to Southampton's past - to the Basque children of 1937 - to the present and to the future.

Dedication of tree to the People of Hampshire
This event, which included a tribute to the tree of Guernica

NEWS
Na-Mara Retires
The much-loved Na-Mara duo of Roberto García and Paul McNamara have decided to retire from live
performances from autumn next year.
These very talented musicians have given us unstinting support over the years. The good news is that
they will continue to write music and do studio work.
We thank them both for their considerable contribution to the Association and for the pleasure that
they have given us and look forward to following their progress.

Away at Home a poem
Welsh poet, Patrick Jones, presents a poem Away at Home dedicated to the Basque refugees who came to
Caerleon in 1937 and their love of football.
Following a reading of a working draft of his poem at the Caerleon events held in July last year, we
are delighted to present the finished version here …

Natalia Benjamin Prize 2023 relaunch
Now to include: school projects (individual or group), undergraduate dissertations, postgraduate
dissertations, academic articles, novels, plays, documentaries, films …
The Natalia Benjamin Prize was established in 2018 following a generous donation by Prof. & Mrs
Buchanan. This was an award for an undergraduate essay prize.
The disruption caused to University life by Covid and lockdown has led to a re-evaluation of the
prize which now has a much broader remit.
Since 2019 then it has been on hold and we are now ready to relaunch!

Bombing of Gernika — 85th Anniversary, 26th April
This shocking article in Deia (23 April 2023) discloses hitherto little known details about
the Italian airforce involvement in the bombing of Gernika on 26th April 1937.
General Franco's lie about this event persists — at least 13 Italian fighter pilots took part in the bombing of Gernika.

NEW BOOK
"Happy and Safe: The Basque Child Refugees in Cumberland and Westmorland 1937 - 1939"

Rob has been studying, writing about, and lecturing on the experiences of refugees in Cumbria for
many years. Now he turns his focus on the Basque Children who arrived in the North West in 1937. He
has had full access to the archives of the Charles and Lady Cecilia Roberts who brought into
existence a colony of 100 children in Brampton near Carlisle and a satellite for 25 children at
Ambleside. Rob describes the lives of the children and the impressive range of people who stepped
forward to support them both financially and with care and attention.

Queridos lectores
Como siempre, espero que esta carta os encuentre a todos con buena salud y que podáis descansar y
relajaros junto a la familia y los amigos, y lejos del trabajo y otras tensiones.
El boletín anterior se centraba en los maravillosos actos conmemorativos del 85 aniversario que representaron el
final de otro capítulo. A medida que la Asociación avanza, me gustaría darles a conocer algunos de
los cambios que se están produciendo en nuestra Asociación.
En una reciente reunión de los fideicomisarios, acordamos pasar a una estructura de gestión plana
con responsabilidad, implicación y acción compartidas entre todos los fideicomisarios. Esto
significa que toda la correspondencia que se envíe a la Asociación se dirigirá a los siete
administradores actuales, y no sólo a mí.
También acordamos, en principio, aumentar el número de
administradores y formar, o utilizar, un grupo de apoyo/trabajo/asesoramiento más amplio al que
podamos recurrir para que nos ayude en nuestro trabajo. Se espera así aumentar la representación de
la segunda generación y el grado de participación de quienes así lo deseen.
En princpio estas dos últimas ideas son las que se han acordado, pero habrá que seguir debatiéndolas
en una futura reunión de los administradores antes de establecer los detalles sobre
cómo funcionarán y cuándo se pondrán en práctica.
En esta reunión también acordamos adoptar una política para prevenir la intimidación y el acoso.
Aparte de estos asuntos internos, nos entristece saber que nuestros incondicionales seguidores de
Na-Mara van a retirarse del servicio activo para dedicarse a actividades más relacionadas con el
estudio. Les damos las gracias y les deseamos lo mejor.
Como de costumbre, mas abajo puedes seguir todas nuestras actividades y noticias recientes.
Como habrán deducido de todo lo anterior, ya no vamos a tener Secretario ni Presidente, aunque Ed
Packard seguirá siendo el Tesorero. Por lo tanto, aprovecho esta oportunidad para retirarme de gran
parte de la gestión diaria de la asociación y, aunque seguiré siendo un administrador activo,
concentraré mi tiempo en el sitio web y en este boletín asociado, donde seguiré trabajando con
Willie y Gerald. Por supuesto, completaré todas las charlas y proyectos pendientes en los que esté
involucrada y seguiré apoyando a la asociación, pero ahora desde la retaguardia. Gracias a todos por
vuestro apoyo en el pasado.

Na-Mara se retira
El querido dúo Na-Mara, formado por Roberto García y Paul McNamara, ha decidido retirarse de las
actuaciones en directo a partir de otoño del año que viene.
Estos músicos de gran talento nos han prestado un apoyo incondicional a lo largo de los años. La
buena noticia es que seguirán componiendo música y trabajando en el estudio.
Les damos las gracias por su considerable contribución a la Asociación y por el placer que nos han
proporcionado.

Fuera en casa
El poeta galés Patrick Jones presenta un poema titulado Fuera en casa, dedicado a los refugiados
vascos que llegaron a Caerleon en 1937 y a su afición por el fútbol.

Relanzamiento del Premio Natalia Benjamin 2023
Ahora se incluyen: proyectos escolares (individuales o de grupo), tesis de licenciatura,
tesis de posgrado, artículos académicos, novelas, obras de teatro, documentales, películas …
El Premio Natalia Benjamin se creó en 2018 tras una generosa donación del Prof. y la Sra. Buchanan.
Se trataba de un premio para un ensayo de pregrado.
La interrupción causada a la vida de la Universidad por Covid
y el cierre ha llevado a una reevaluación del premio que ahora tiene un cometido mucho más amplio.
Desde 2019 ha estado en suspenso y ahora estamos listos para relanzarlo.

"Felices y Seguros: Los niños vascos refugiados en Cumberland y Westmorland 1937 - 1939"

Rob lleva muchos años estudiando, escribiendo y dando conferencias sobre las experiencias de los
refugiados en Cumbria. Ahora se centra en los niños vascos que llegaron al noroeste en 1937. Ha
tenido pleno acceso a los archivos de Charles y Lady Cecilia Roberts, que crearon una colonia de 100
niños en Brampton, cerca de Carlisle, y un centro satélite para 25 niños en Ambleside. Rob describe
la vida de los niños y el impresionante abanico de personas que se ofrecieron a apoyarlos tanto
económicamente como con cuidados y atención.
