Father Gregorio Arrien Berrojaetxebarria
Died 13 December 2019 in Amorebieta-Etxano
It is with the greatest sadness that we announce the death of Father Gregorio Arrien Berrojaetxebarria aged 83 in Amorebieta-Etxano. Fr Gregorio was the great historian and recorder of the evacuation of Basque Children during the Spanish Civil War.
Amongst those attending his funeral was Derek Doyle OBE, former British Consul of Bilbao and Member of BCA'37UK-Euskadi
He placed wreaths on behalf of the two associations: BCA'37UK-Euskadi and BCA'37 UK which were marked by ribbons with the words "Asociación de Niños vascos de la Guerra del Reino Unido" and "Niños Vascos evacuados a Gran Bretaña en '37". On behalf of our two organisations he presented our condolences to the Arrien family and to the Pasionista community of Orue, of which Fr Arrien was a member.
Father Gregorio Arrien
Gregorio Arrien was amongst many things a great recorder of Basque historical memory of the time surrounding the Spanish Civil War. His scholarship covered not only the evacuation and exile of children from Euskadi, but the history of Basque schools and education during the Second Republic and also the history of his religious order, the Passionist Community. He was an inspired teacher and was mentor to many who have continued his work. His life was spent as a teacher, educationalist, promoter of the Basque language and he was the distinguished author of 18 books.
His works on the evacuated Basque children have provided us with a wealth of detail not only on those that came to the UK. The two books pertaining specifically to those children who came to the UK are: Niños Vascos evacuados a Gran Bretaña 1937-1940, published 1991 by Asociación de Niños Evacuados el 37 (of which he was president) and ¡Salvad a los Niños! Historia del Exilio Vasco en Gran Bretaña, 1937-1940, published 2014 by Sabino Arana Fundazioa. Both of these give many details of the colonies and include lists of all the children and accompanying staff who came here on the SS Habana.
Natalia Benjamin and I remember him as a good friend with an astute mind, encyclopaedic knowledge and a gentle sense of humour, who could always be called upon for help, information and endless encouragement. My last contact with him was just three weeks ago when he sent a supportive message on the formation of our new association BCA'37UK Euskadi.
He will be so sadly missed.

Con gran tristeza anunciamos la muerte del padre Gregorio Arrien Berrojaetxebarria, de 83 años, en Amorebieta-Etxano el 13 de diciembre.
Su funeral será el lunes a las 6:00 pm en la iglesia de San Pablo de la Comunidad Pasionista de Euba. Nuestras más sinceras condolencias van a toda su familia y amigos.
Gregorio Arrien fue, entre muchas cosas, un gran registrador de la memoria histórica vasca de la época que rodeaba la Guerra Civil española. Su beca cubrió no solo la evacuación y el exilio de niños de Euskadi, sino también la historia de las escuelas y la educación vascas durante la Segunda República y también la historia de su orden religiosa, la Comunidad Pasionista. Fue un maestro inspirado y fue mentor de muchos que continuaron su trabajo. Pasó su vida como profesor, pedagogo, promotor del euskera y fue el distinguido autor de 18 libros.
Sus trabajos sobre los niños vascos evacuados nos han proporcionado una gran cantidad de detalles no solo sobre los que vinieron al Reino Unido. Los dos libros que pertenecen específicamente a esos niños que vinieron al Reino Unido son: Niños Vascos evacuados a Gran Bretaña 1937-1940, publicado en 1991 por la Asociación de Niños Evacuados el 37 (del cual fue presidente) y ¡Salvad a los Niños! Natalia Benjamin, fundadora de nuestra asociación en el Reino Unido, y yo le recordamos como un muy buen amigo con una mente privilegiada, conocimiento enciclopédico y un sentido del humor gentil, a quien siempre se podía pedir ayuda, información y apoyo sin fin. Mi último contacto con él fue hace solo tres semanas cuando nos envió un mensaje de mucho ánimo sobre la formación de nuestra nueva asociación BCA’37UK Euskadi.
Se le echará mucho de menos.
