New Documentary: Niños in Wales

A new TV programme about the experiences of Basque refugee children in Wales will be screened by BBC1 Wales The Basque Children of ’37 Association has been closely involved with finding suitable archival material for the documentary.

BBC Broadcast: 'Habana'

BBC Radio 4 broadcast a programme to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the evacuation of the children from Bilbao in May 1937 during the Spanish Civil War.

The programme was entitled 'Habana', after the ship the children travelled in, and included interviews with the Niños and the Niños-Niños, and na-mara's music featured in the programme.

The broadcast date coincided with the 75th anniversary of the fall of Bilbao to Franco's forces.

75th anniversary commemoration in Santurce for Niños de la Guerra

Our counterpart in Bilbao, Niños Vascos Evacuados del ’37, held an anniverary lunch in Santurce, and niños were cordially invited to attend. After a reception from the authorities and distinguished guests at 2.30 there was a lunch at the Palacio Oriol, also in Santurce.

New Online Archives Open

A new online archive marks the 75th anniversary of the arrival of 4,000 young refugees from the Basque region of Spain.

More than 13,000 pages of documents relating to the Spanish Civil War have been digitized by the Modern Records Centre at the University of Warwick as part of the largest English-language digital collection on the conflict.

The collection, Trabajadores, contains letters, reports, and publicity material from the Trades Union Congress files and other key archive collections.

The first event in the Association's commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the niños' arrival in the UK

The school examined topics such as the reasons for the children's evacuation and their experiences while in Britain, and placed this episode within the wider context of British responses to refugees from fascist persecution in the later 1930s
